Do You Need A Videographer at Your Wedding?

I get asked this questions a lot – Do we need a videographer?

As a wedding photographer, I know how important your day is to you and your families – it’s a celebration of love and happiness together with everyone that you love surrounding you. Thats why I wanted to write this post that even though photography is important, I wanted to stress the significance of video too.

I get asked so many times, do you think we need a videographer and my answer is always the same, if you can afford it – then yes!

Photography and Video each have their unique strengths and combining them can provide a complete and immersive way to remember your wedding day, but not just your wedding day, but the people that were there to celebrate.

Photography can capture a single moment in time, evoking nostalgia and making you feel like you did right in that moment. Video however can transport you back using movement and sound adding more emotional depth at times which photos can’t do at times.

Why Hire A Videographer?

I totally get it, we all have unique things that matter most to us, especially when it comes to weddings. Maybe for some couples, it’s about creating an enchanting ambiance for themselves and their guests or wearing that designer dress or suit. And that’s perfectly fine. Everyone has their own right to do what they want at their wedding. And as a photographer, I’m here to help capture those moments for those who appreciate the significance of preserving their memories through photography, but I really think it’s important to invest in video too.

Here’s why I truly believe that video is essential for preserving wedding memories. When I reminisce about my own special day, I recall my dad having a great time, dancing around, and laughing uncontrollably. He was just being his amazing self. Sadly, my dad is no longer with us, but I can still cherish the memories of him through my wedding video.

What’s even more important to me is that my youngest daughter, Isla, who was too young to have known my dad, can watch the video and witness his personality firsthand. She can see him cracking jokes, dancing, and most importantly, hear his voice, his laughter, and see his unique mannerisms. That’s something that photography cannot replicate. It brings me immense joy to know that my daughter will have a chance to know my dad through our wedding video. And this is why I think investing in a good videographer is well worth it.

Something to consider when hiring a videographer

Choosing a videographer can be equally as hard as choosing a wedding photographer. When it comes to styles they are quite varied, but a lot of videographers are good at most of them and they generally adapt to the style of the couple and the wedding. The best way is to look for what you want is to research videographers. So take your time, do your research, and find a videographer whose style and approach resonates with you. After all, this film will be a cherished keepsake that you’ll watch for years to come. I always work with videographers that fit my natural documentary wedding photography style, because most of my couples want a similar vibe for their video too.

It’s also important to find a team that works well together. If there’s any sense of competition between them, it could lead to awkwardness and affect the results for you. Thankfully, I’ve never had any issues with videographers (fingers crossed), because we’re all there to do our best job for our clients, and that can only happen through teamwork and collaboration.

The best way to find a great photographer or videographer is to ask for recommendations from people you know who have used them before. Don’t be shy about reaching out to friends and family to see who they hired for their own weddings. Or if you have a preferred videographer or photographer ask them for a recommendation, I’m sure they will be more than happy to help. I have written an article on 9 important questions to ask a photographer, these same questions can be applied to videographers too, so definitely check that post out.

Trust me, investing in a talented and cohesive team will make all the difference when you look back on your special day. You’ll be grateful for the stunning photos and videos that captured your memories in the most vivid and memorable way possible. I know I am!

Wedding Videography Costs and Packages

I totally understand that budget is a big consideration when deciding whether to hire a photographer or videographer for your wedding. It’s important to remember that an excellent photographer or videographer may cost more than you anticipated, but if it’s important to you, it’s worth the investment.

If you’re on a tight budget, my advice would be to prioritise what matters most to you, instead of trying to split your funds between two average options.

Luckily, most videographers offer packages that can be tailored to your specific needs and budget. This means you can choose the services that align with your expectations and financial limitations. So don’t be afraid to ask around and find a videographer who can give you the quality you want at a price that works for you.

But Rahul we will never watch our wedding video

You may not! But even if you only watch it once, it will bring back all the wonderful memories and emotions of your special day. And let’s not forget about future generations. Your wedding video will become a treasured family heirloom that your children and grandchildren will cherish for years to come. I know my wedding video will be more important to my daughters than it is to me and my wife.

I know from personal experience that investing in talented videographers is so important. I believe that just like my photography captures the essence of the day, the same goes for video. Your wedding day is a special milestone in your life, and having a professional videographer to capture all those precious moments is priceless over your guests phone footage is absolutely priceless.

Hope this was helpful!

I hope that this article has given you some valuable insights into why I think videographers are just as important as photographers on your wedding day. Ultimately, the decision is yours, but my advice is to not have any regrets in the future. After all is said and done, the only things that will remain are your photos and your video, so make sure they are the best they can be.
