Do I Need A Second Shooter For My Wedding?
Every time I have an enquiry, most people who are looking for a wedding photographer often ask me if they need a second photographer, especially when it comes to Indian weddings. It’s totally understandable – as there are so many different opinions out there, and differing opinions too! Some people swear by having a second shooter, while others like myself don’t think it’s necessary generally. But how do you figure out what’s best for your wedding?
I had briefly touched on this in my other blog post ‘9 Important Questions To Ask A Wedding Photographer‘ but I had so many messages about this, I thought i’d go into more detail here.
Is a second photographer necessary?
The first scenario is when you and your partner are getting ready in two separate locations and you want to make sure that both of these moments are fully documented. This is where having a second photographer can be really valuable, as they can be in one location while I'm in the other, making sure that we capture every important moment.
The second scenario where two photographers are generally required is when there are multiple religious ceremonies happening at the same time. This can often happen at Jewish weddings with the Tisch or at Sikh weddings after the groom is dressed his turban tying followed by a small ceremony with his sisters is important to document.
However, even in these cases, there are ways to work around the need for a second photographer. For example, by creating a timeline that allows me to fully document both ceremonies, we can make sure that you get the coverage that you want without the need for a second photographer.
How do you shoot a wedding alone?
I want to start by saying that I completely understand how important your wedding day is to you. As a photographer, I have had the privilege of documenting many weddings, both big and small. Although I have mainly photographed weddings solo for the past few years, I want you to know that I have a lot of experience capturing every special moment of the day, even at larger Indian and Jewish weddings. You can view a full gallery of wedding large Indian wedding I photographed on my own here.
I take great pride in my ability to document everything on my own, from the important moments to the reactions and interactions with your guests. My goal is to always provide you with a comprehensive set of beautiful images that you can cherish for years to come. That being said, I never want to compromise on the quality of your wedding coverage. If I ever feel that a second photographer is necessary to ensure that everything is captured perfectly, I would be honest and upfront with you from the beginning.
One more thing to remember is that it is a wedding, not a commercial photoshoot. I’ve worked at weddings with multiple photographers and videographers. Once there were actually 7 of us. 7! It completely changes the feeling of the day for everyone involved. For the photo/video team it becomes a struggle to capture a shot without a colleague being in the background. I personally feel that images should never be more important than the experience. I try and make myself less visible, because you and your guests deserve to focus all your attention on what really matters. Celebrating your day.
How Important Is A Second Shooter At Your Wedding?
As a professional wedding photographer, I want to emphasise the importance of communication. It's crucial to think about how you want your big day captured. Don't dismiss a photographer just because they don't have an associate or second shooter in their standard package, like myself i’m sure many others have them as an additional extra. I would definitely take some time to chat with potential photographers and learn about their approach to documenting weddings. After all, every wedding is unique, and it's essential to figure out what works best for you.
Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to hire a second photographer is entirely up to you. What matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident in the photographer you choose to document your special day. Whether you decide to go with a solo photographer like myself, or a team of photographers, I am dedicated to providing you with exceptional service and unforgettable images.
If you have any questions about my approach to wedding photography, please feel free to ask me anything! I understand how vital it is to capture your special day in a way that reflects your vision, so let’s talk about your wedding day timeline and figure out the best collection to fit your needs!
